Cascais, the Portuguese municipality known as “The land of kings and fishermen”, is only 30kms away from Lisbon. It was chosen to be the residence of King Luis I of Portugal and nobles, and since then, it was a favorite spot for kings and nobles on the Atlantic.

Now, Cascais is looking forward to becoming “The land of digital nomads”. President of Cascais Tourism Board, Bernardo Corrêa de Barros stated that the municipality has everything a digital nomad looks for. From the co-working spaces to one of the highest internet speeds in the world, to its multicultural population and English-speaking locals… Cascais is more than ready for digital nomads.

The municipality, situated on the Portuguese Riviera is famous for its blue sea and the natural park that takes up one-third of its total area; Its Casino Estoril, is famous to have inspired Ian Fleming’s first 007 novel, Casino Royale.

As part of Portugal, one of the safest countries in the world, Cascais is no exception, and it is suitable for both families or solo nomads.

There are endless activities, adventures and water sports that you can do in Cascais. If you are a culture enthusiast, Cascais has about 18 museums and its own symphonic orchestra.

Bernardo expressed his optimism regarding the future of remote work in Cascais. The board is launching a special initiative for digital nomads in 2022, and by end of year, the city will have more than 700 hotspots, allowing nomads to work while enjoying the beautiful outdoors.

The board also advises digital nomads to contact it for help regarding visas, settling in Cascais, setting up a business or even finding the most suitable working space for their needs.

As for the paperwork requirements, you can check the requirements for Portugal’s digital nomad residency, and you can easily get travel and health insurance coverage from SafetyWing, that has packages tailored to digital nomads.

“The only difficulty that can face digital nomads in Cascais?” said Bernardo, “might be not getting distracting with the beauty of the city”.
