Remote work has created a strange obsession with internet speed.

An apartment advertises 100 Mbps Wi-Fi and it sounds good. A coworking space promotes 500 Mbps and it sounds even better. Fibre connections offering 1 Gbps can make anything slower seem inadequate.

But how much internet speed do we actually need to work remotely?

For most remote professionals, the answer is surprisingly modest.

A single remote worker can usually work very comfortably with 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload, provided the connection is stable. For two people working simultaneously, we would generally look for at least 50 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload, with 100 Mbps or more providing useful additional headroom.

The important part, however, is the phrase provided the connection is stable.

A reliable 30 Mbps connection can be dramatically better for remote work than an unstable 300 Mbps connection. Video calls depend not only on download speed but also on upload speed, latency, jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi quality and how many other people are using the connection.

In other words, asking “How many Mbps do I need?” is only the beginning.

Here is what actually matters.

The Short Answer: How Much Internet Speed Is Enough for Remote Work?

There is no single number that works for every remote worker because different jobs use the internet differently.

Someone writing documents, answering emails and working in browser-based applications requires very little bandwidth. A video editor uploading hundreds of gigabytes to the cloud has completely different needs. Two people having simultaneous Zoom calls from the same apartment create another scenario entirely.

As a practical benchmark, this is what we would look for:

These are not minimum technical requirements. Most applications can function with much less.

They are comfortable real-world targets that leave room for other devices, background downloads, software updates and inevitable fluctuations in Wi-Fi performance.

That distinction matters.

If Zoom technically needs only a few Mbps, choosing accommodation with a connection that delivers exactly that amount would leave almost no margin when anything else starts consuming bandwidth.

How Many Mbps Do You Need for Zoom?

Zoom itself requires far less bandwidth than many remote workers assume.

According to Zoom’s official system requirements, a 720p one-to-one video call needs around 1.2 Mbps in both directions. For a 720p group call, Zoom recommends approximately 2.6 Mbps upload and 1.8 Mbps download. Even a 1080p group video call is around 3.8 Mbps upload and 3 Mbps download. That means a stable 10 Mbps connection can technically handle a video call.

But that does not mean we would recommend booking an apartment offering 10 Mbps internet for a month of remote work.

The difference is headroom.

During a Zoom call, our computer may also be synchronising Dropbox or Google Drive. Slack or Teams may be running in the background. Our phone might be downloading photos. The operating system could decide that this is the perfect moment for an update.

Someone else in the apartment may also start streaming Netflix.

The connection is shared between all of those activities.

This is why 25 Mbps for one remote worker feels significantly safer than designing a setup around Zoom’s absolute requirements.

What About Microsoft Teams?

Microsoft Teams operates on similarly modest bandwidth.

Microsoft says Teams can deliver HD video using less than 1.5 Mbps in some scenarios, while its recommended bandwidth for video meetings is higher depending on quality, layout and meeting conditions. Teams also adapts the media quality according to the available connection and prioritises audio when bandwidth becomes constrained.

Again, the lesson is not that remote workers need extremely fast internet.

It is that modern video-conferencing software is surprisingly efficient.

What causes problems is usually not that our 100 Mbps connection is incapable of running Teams.

It is that the connection temporarily drops, the upload speed becomes saturated, the Wi-Fi signal is weak or latency suddenly increases.

And that brings us to one of the biggest misunderstandings about internet speed.

Download Speed Is Only Half the Story

When accommodation owners advertise their internet connection, they almost always mention download speed.

100 Mbps Wi-Fi.

300 Mbps fibre.

1 Gbps high-speed internet.

But remote workers should be looking at two numbers:

download speed and upload speed.

Download speed measures how quickly information reaches us.

It matters when loading websites, downloading files, streaming video or receiving someone else’s camera feed during a meeting.

Upload speed measures how quickly information travels in the opposite direction.

That matters when our camera is transmitting video, when we share our screen, upload documents, back up files to the cloud or send large attachments.

This creates a common trap.

An internet connection might offer:

100 Mbps download / 5 Mbps upload.

At first glance, that looks excellent.

For watching Netflix, it probably is.

For two remote workers simultaneously attending important video meetings while cloud services are synchronising in the background, that 5 Mbps upload speed becomes much more problematic.

A symmetrical 50 Mbps connection — 50 down and 50 up — could actually be a better remote-work connection than 300 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up.

This is why simply asking an Airbnb host, hotel or coliving space “How fast is the Wi-Fi?” doesn’t always give us the information we need.

What Does 100 Mbps Actually Mean?

Internet speed is normally measured in megabits per second, or Mbps.

That is different from megabytes per second, usually written MB/s.

There are eight bits in one byte, which means a 100 Mbps connection has a theoretical maximum transfer rate of around 12.5 megabytes per second.

In perfect conditions, downloading a 1 GB file over a 100 Mbps connection could therefore take around 80 seconds.

Real-world performance is usually somewhat lower.

But for normal remote work, 100 Mbps is already a lot of bandwidth.

We can browse the web, participate in video calls, stream music, use cloud applications and perform most professional tasks without coming remotely close to continuously consuming 100 Mbps.

For many remote workers, moving from 100 Mbps to 500 Mbps will make almost no noticeable difference during the working day.

Moving from an unstable connection to a stable one, on the other hand, can transform the experience completely.

Latency Can Matter More Than Speed

Imagine two connections.

Connection A provides 30 Mbps.

Connection B provides 300 Mbps.

Most people instinctively choose Connection B.

But suppose Connection A has 25 milliseconds of latency while Connection B has 250 milliseconds.

For interactive work, Connection A may feel significantly better.

Latency is the time it takes for information to travel between our device and another server or device.

A large download can tolerate latency quite well. The file might arrive a fraction of a second later and we will never notice.

A conversation cannot.

High latency creates the familiar experience where two people repeatedly interrupt each other because the audio arrives late.

“Sorry, go ahead.”

“No, you go.”

“Sorry, we spoke at the same time.”

That is often a latency problem, not a bandwidth problem.

Zoom generally recommends latency of 150 ms or less. It also monitors jitter and packet loss because all three can affect video and audio quality.

For remote work, we would broadly consider latency below 50 ms excellent, below 100 ms very good and below 150 ms generally workable for video calls.

Once latency gets much higher, conversations can start feeling less natural.

This becomes especially relevant when travelling far from the servers we are connecting to or when using VPNs that route internet traffic through another country.

Jitter: The Metric Almost Nobody Talks About

Latency measures delay.

Jitter measures how inconsistent that delay is.

Suppose packets of information normally reach us in 30 milliseconds.

If almost every packet arrives at roughly that speed, the connection is predictable.

But imagine the next packets arrive after 25 ms, 90 ms, 35 ms, 180 ms and 40 ms.

The average speed may not look disastrous, but the constant variation makes real-time communication much harder.

Audio can become distorted.

Video may freeze.

Voices can sound robotic.

Zoom recommends jitter of roughly 40 ms or less.

Again, increasing our internet plan from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps will not necessarily solve this.

The problem may instead come from poor Wi-Fi, congestion, the router, the ISP or the route our data is taking across the internet.

Packet Loss: When Parts of the Conversation Simply Disappear

Internet communication works by breaking information into packets and sending them across a network.

Ideally, virtually all of those packets arrive.

When some do not, we have packet loss.

For downloading a file, missing packets can simply be retransmitted.

Real-time conversations are less forgiving.

If part of our colleague’s sentence fails to arrive in time, Zoom cannot stop the entire conversation and wait for it.

That is why poor connections produce frozen faces, distorted voices or sentences where one or two words suddenly disappear.

Zoom generally recommends keeping packet loss at 2% or below, although for important professional calls we would ideally want it as close to zero as possible.

A speed test showing 200 Mbps therefore tells only part of the story.

We might have plenty of bandwidth while still having a terrible video-call experience.

Wi-Fi Speed Is Not the Same as Internet Speed

This distinction becomes particularly important in hotels, Airbnbs, coliving spaces and older apartments.

The internet connection enters the building through a modem or fibre connection.

Our laptop usually connects to that internet connection through Wi-Fi.

Those are two different links.

The building might genuinely have a 500 Mbps fibre connection.

But if our bedroom is three floors away from the router with several concrete walls between us and the access point, our laptop may receive only a small fraction of it.

This explains why hosts can truthfully advertise excellent internet while guests experience unreliable Wi-Fi.

The connection entering the property is fast.

The wireless network delivering it to the actual workspace is not.

This is also why a speed test should ideally be performed from the desk where we will actually work, rather than next to the router.

For longer stays, this can matter more than almost any other feature of the accommodation.

When a temporary apartment becomes our workplace for one or two months, internet reliability stops being a travel convenience. It becomes basic professional infrastructure.

2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz Wi-Fi

Most modern routers can provide both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi.

The difference becomes useful when troubleshooting a remote-work connection.

A 5 GHz network generally offers higher speeds and encounters less congestion, but its signal does not travel through walls as effectively.

A 2.4 GHz network travels farther and penetrates obstacles better, but it is slower and often more congested.

This means the fastest option depends partly on where we are sitting.

If the router is in the same room or nearby, 5 GHz will often perform better.

If we are working several rooms away, 2.4 GHz may provide the more stable connection even if the headline speed is lower.

And if the work is particularly important, an Ethernet cable can remove Wi-Fi variability altogether.

A boring wired connection remains one of the best productivity accessories remote workers can have.

Is 100 Mbps Good Enough for Remote Work?

For the overwhelming majority of remote workers, yes.

A stable 100 Mbps connection with reasonable upload speed is excellent.

One person can participate in HD video calls, browse, stream, use cloud applications and download files simultaneously without any difficulty.

Two remote workers can also comfortably share 100 Mbps in most circumstances.

We would pay much closer attention to the upload speed.

A connection of 100 Mbps down / 20 Mbps up is a very good setup for two people working remotely.

A symmetrical 100/100 Mbps fibre connection is excellent.

A connection advertised as 100 Mbps down / 3 Mbps up, however, deserves more caution.

The headline number is identical.

The remote-work experience may not be.

What If Two People Are Working From the Same Airbnb?

This is increasingly common.

A couple books an apartment for a month. Both work remotely. Both have meetings. Sometimes those meetings happen at exactly the same time.

This is where bandwidth headroom becomes valuable.

Two simultaneous HD Zoom or Teams calls can easily consume several Mbps of upload capacity. Add cloud synchronisation, messaging applications, phones, tablets and other connected devices, and a connection that looked perfectly adequate for one person can become constrained.

For two people, 50 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up is a reasonable practical target.

Around 100 Mbps down with 20 Mbps or more upload gives us considerably more breathing room.

But, once again, stability remains more important than reaching a particular headline number.

We would rather share a reliable 50/50 fibre connection than an unstable 300/20 connection.

Why VPNs Can Make a Fast Connection Feel Slow

Many remote employees use a corporate VPN.

A VPN encrypts internet traffic and routes it through another server before sending it toward its destination.

That can add latency.

Imagine working from Thailand while the company’s VPN gateway is in Germany.

Instead of some traffic taking the most direct route to its destination, it may first travel thousands of kilometres to Germany.

Encryption, server load and network routing can also affect performance.

This does not mean VPNs are inherently problematic. For many companies, they are an essential security tool.

It simply means that remote workers should test their connection while the corporate VPN is active, because a speed test performed without it may not accurately reflect the working experience.

If the VPN creates significant performance problems, the solution should be discussed with the company’s IT team rather than bypassing corporate security settings.

What About Uploading Large Files?

This is one of the situations where very fast internet genuinely matters.

Suppose we need to upload a 10 GB video project.

At 10 Mbps upload speed, the theoretical upload time is more than two hours.

At 100 Mbps upload speed, the same transfer could theoretically finish in around 13 minutes.

Suddenly, the difference between internet plans becomes very meaningful.

Video editors, photographers, designers working with large files, developers transferring large datasets and anyone performing regular cloud backups should therefore prioritise upload speed much more heavily than someone whose work consists mainly of browser applications and meetings.

For those professionals, symmetrical fibre can be one of the most valuable features an accommodation or coworking space can offer.

Should Remote Workers Look for 1 Gbps Internet?

Usually, no.

Gigabit internet is excellent to have.

But most individual remote workers do not need it.

There is very little difference between opening a Google Doc on a 100 Mbps connection and opening it on a 1 Gbps connection.

Zoom will not suddenly become ten times clearer.

Slack messages will not arrive ten times faster.

For everyday remote work, we eventually hit diminishing returns.

What we would prefer instead is a reliable connection, strong Wi-Fi coverage, good upload speed, low latency and backup connectivity.

A 1 Gbps headline number is impressive marketing.

A stable professional setup is more valuable.

The Importance of Backup Internet

If our income depends on being online, redundancy is worth thinking about.

Even excellent fibre connections occasionally fail.

Routers break.

Construction work cuts cables.

Power outages happen.

Internet service providers experience disruptions.

For someone working occasionally from home, that may simply mean an inconvenient afternoon.

For someone running an important client presentation from another country, it can become a serious problem.

A mobile hotspot or eSIM can provide a simple second connection.

It does not need to replace the main internet service permanently. It only needs to keep us online long enough to finish a meeting or move somewhere else.

How to Check an Airbnb or Hotel Before Booking

This is where remote workers can avoid many problems.

“Fast Wi-Fi” means almost nothing.

Even “100 Mbps internet” is incomplete.

Before booking a month-long stay where important work will take place, we would ideally want to know the actual download and upload speed, whether the connection is shared with other apartments or guests, whether Wi-Fi reaches the workspace reliably, and whether Ethernet is available.

For especially important stays, asking the host for a recent speed-test screenshot taken from the actual apartment can be worthwhile.

If several remote workers will share the accommodation, mention that too.

A connection that is perfect for one person checking emails may not be designed for four people joining video meetings simultaneously.

Coworking and coliving operators should also understand this distinction.

Remote workers are not necessarily looking for the largest possible Mbps number.

They are looking for reliability.

So, What Is the Best Internet Speed for Remote Work?

For most people, the answer is much simpler than internet providers would have us believe.

25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload is generally enough for one remote worker.

50–100 Mbps down and 20 Mbps or more upload is a strong setup for two remote workers.

Beyond that, additional bandwidth becomes increasingly useful for households with many users or professionals regularly transferring very large files.

But speed alone should never be the deciding factor.

We should also look at upload speed.

We should care about latency.

We should care about jitter and packet loss.

We should test the Wi-Fi where we actually work.

And if our livelihood depends on connectivity, we should have a backup.

The difference between good and bad internet for remote work is rarely the difference between 100 Mbps and 500 Mbps.

It is the difference between a connection we can trust and one we cannot.

Remote work does not require extraordinary internet.

It requires predictable internet.

And when our next video call involves a client, employer or team waiting on the other side of the world, predictability matters far more than whatever impressive number appears on the router box.
